The Expedit: 7 Ways to Use It

We recently read a Craig's List post advertising the sale of Ikea's Expedit with the line "It's soldiered its way through two homes but now it's time to let it go." Clearly this poster didn't know that this versatile piece has at least 9 lives. Here are ways that they could've used it in 7 more homes...

i think that sometimes the furniture will not make it through another move. we have just recently "invested" in some ikea stockholm book shelves and frankly one more move and they're toast. good thing we got them 50% off or i'd be cranky. as much as i love ikea for their textiles, their furniture doesn't stand the test of time, especially if it's been reassembled and moved more than once.

the expedit is also THE record shelf per excellence. It's sturdy enough to hold tons of vinyl, smooth enough so that it doesn't damage the cover, big enough so that you can put some slightly unusual shaped records in there.

I ended up putting some wooden rails about 13" from the from so that don't go too deep and putting a homemade cross in the back is a good idea to make it extra sturdier (I use molding for those)

When the Expedit wouldn't work in our living room anymore, my husband and I turned ours into a dresser. It works really well in our oddly shaped bedroom. We love it!

I stacked a 2x2 one onto a 4x2 and use that as a room divider. It's a visual divide more than a physical barrier, but in my >500 sq ft apartment it reads really well. It creates a clear definition between my living room area and my dining room area.

I love the Expedit. I use it similarly to the last picture in my studio apartment too. And I love that I can use both sides to store books and things. Its great. Although it will hurt when I have to move!

I loved the Expedit we had in our previous place. We used it like a room divider, like in the last picture. The best thing about it was that the shelves are deep enough we could put books on both sides of it, effectively doubling our book storage space. When we moved, we bought a whole wall of Billy bookcases, with doors, but seeing these pictures makes me wonder why I didn't think of just getting more Expedits.

BTW, in photo #5, the white Eames chair (LCW) has the back piece put on upside down! Is this a badly-done knock-off, or a badly put together "real thing"??

No credits so don't know where the photo is from…

Ditto on the Expedit being awesome for vinyl...hubby's 400 records are neatly shelved in our family room Expedits. The only thing better would be for him to embrace a fully digital library and shed the master copies...

Question: Anyone out there w/ experience or ideas of how to raise Espedit off the ground a few inches without compromising stability?

(I'd love to use it on legs and plaform (kind of a parsons platform!). Flush to the ground doesn't work in my place.)

How fun! I'd put wallpaper in the back of mine but you wouldn't be able to see it!

I bought two frames that fit inside the cubes, stretched some fabric across them, and attached them to two of the cubes with hinges:

I just can't seem to get rid of ALL of my clutter, and this allows me to hide a bit of it.

We use ours currently as a room divider between the living room and dining room, books on one side and kitchen/dining stuff on the other. I need to seriously declutter it though

My husband and I used a 4X2 Expedit and two of the matching desks to create office space for both of us:

kushkush we use a large Expedit (4x4) as a room divider/bookshelf and have it on 6 Capita legs. It is extremely sturdy and we have no fear of it falling over (we don't live in an earthquake zone) I love that we can vacuume under it.

we're thinking of using the narrower expedit (with 8 shelves i think) as shelves/clothing storage in our attic bedroom, they are deep enough for boxes and low enough (lengthwise) for the odd ceiling/wall height. i also love putting them on castors for versatility.
